What is Wakame Extract?

Wakame extract is obtained from the seaweed of Undaria pinnatifida. Wakame Extract’s polysaccharides, proteins, vitamins, antioxidants and minerals content make it a desirable ingredient. It has high levels of calcium (15x more than milk), iron, potassium and sodium. The beauty care industry uses it for moisturizing, soothing and conditioning, texturing skin care, post-lifting, eye care, SPA, sun care and hair masks. The recommended concentration is from 1 to 5%.

It is cultivated in Asian countries mainly in Japan, South Korea and China.

Benefits of Wakame Extract:

It maintains skin firmness, elasticity and smoothness, supports skin regeneration and defends against environmental stress.

Wakame has demonstrated dose-dependent inhibition of hyaluronidase activity in vitro. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that attacks the skin's supply of hyaluronic acid known to improve elasticity and smoothness. The hyaluronic acid binds to collagen and elastin fibers making the skin smooth and firm. The absence of hyaluronic acid would cause the elastin and collagen fibers to be loosely held, leading to loss of skin firmness and smoothness. Wakame prevents the formation of the enzyme hyaluronidase, defending against visible aging and the weakening of dermal thickness.

The high levels of polysaccharides, proteins, vitamins, antioxidants and minerals help our body remain healthy since polysaccharides act as fibroblast stimulators, maintaining the skin's moisture balance. The high levels of B-group vitamins, particularly B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 and B12, are beneficial in relieving inflamed skin and providing anti-inflammatory effects. The sulfated poly fucose, an active ingredient in wakame protects cell wall integrity and stability against environmental factors such as photo damage, temperature and abrasions.

Research has also shown that fucoxanthin in wakame reduces the accumulation of fat. It stimulates fat oxidation and directs the liver to produce more DHA, a type of omega-3 fatty acid that helps reduce the bad cholesterol associated with heart disease and obesity.

A study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that women who had lower levels of manganese in their blood experienced more pain and mood-related symptoms during menstruation. Wakame provides high levels of manganese needed by a woman’s body.

Side Effects & Toxicity:

An extremely safe ingredient, Wakame Extract has no known toxicity in general use and is shown to be non-irritating and suitable for sensitive skin.

Editor’s Note:

The Wakame Seaweed has a relatively high level of sodium. Those who are overweight or have hypertension blood pressure should seek medical advice before including it in their diet.
