What is Punica Granatum Fruit Extract?

Punica granatum is the botanical name for pomegranate. It is mainly found in Iran which is considered to be its primary centre of origin. Ellagic acid, anthocycanins, punicalagins and other chemicals found in pomegranate possess various therapeutic properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenesis.

Benefits of Punica Granatum Fruit Extract:

Pomegranate is rich in antioxidants that help fight and repair free radical damage from the sun and environmental stressors such as hyper pigmentation and age spots. Studies have shown the efficacy of punica granatum extract in protecting the skin against UVB-induced damage. Using cultured human skin fibroblasts, researchers found that the polyphenols in the extract played a significant role in creating a photoprotective barrier to shield the skin against sun damage and skin cancer.

Anthocyanidins, ellagic acid, and punicalagin in the extract work simultaneously to increase microcirculation to renew cells. This stimulates the proliferation of keratinocytes in the epidermis and dermis to nurture new and even tone skin. Collagen is the key protein that ensures the skin to be firm and smooth, free from lines and wrinkles. Ellagic acid not only inhibits enzymes that break down collagen but also extends the life of fibroblasts to support the skin’s structural integrity and elasticity.

Chronic inflammation caused by burns, sunlight, heat and other environmental pollutants can lead to premature aging. The body’s defensive mechanism reacts by releasing enzymes which trigger the free radicals to cause further inflammation by discharging the Matrix Metallo Proteinases (MMPs). MMPs break down collagen and elastin fibres that disrupt, thin and flatten the dermis. The anti-inflammatory compounds in pomegranates - such as polyphenol antioxidants – inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines and prevent the dermis from becoming thin and loose. The extract is also used to help heal skin injuries after studies showed positive results on its efficacy in managing skin burns in rats.

Side Effects & Toxicity:

An extremely safe ingredient, punica granatum fruit extract has no known toxicity in general use and is shown to be non-irritating and suitable for sensitive skin.

Editor’s Note:

In some religious texts, pomegranates have been depicted as a symbol of health, fertility, prosperity, and longevity.
