What is Morus Alba Extract?

Mulberry root extract comes from the white mulberry tree that is native to China but is now cultivated in Europe, Japan, Australia and North America. It has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine and was also popular with the ancient Greeks as the fruit was dedicated to Minerva, the goddess of wisdom. White mulberry is also widely grown for its leaves and color to feed silkworms for commercial production of silk.

Benefits of Morus Alba Extract:

Melanocytes in the epidermis produce melanin pigment to protect the body from harmful UV rays that damage cell and cause sunburn. When cells are damaged, tyrosinase enzyme oxidises tyrosine (a non-essential amino acid produced by the body that helps organs regulate and secrete hormones) resulting in hyperpigmentation. Signs of hyperpigmentation include dark and age spots, melasma and freckles. Mulberry extract inhibits tyrosinase enzyme from oxidizing tyrosine amino acid and also acts as a natural skin brightener.

Antioxidants are substances that fight free radicals known to damage DNA and cause skin cell death. Free radicals can contribute to aging, cancer and heart disease. Mulberries contain anthocyanins and riboflavin - powerful antioxidants that protect the body from free radical damage. The anti-tyrosinase in the extract also possesses anti-inflammatory efficacy which can help reduce skin redness.

Side Effects & Toxicity:

An extremely safe ingredient, mulberry extract has no known toxicity in general use and is shown to be non-irritating and suitable for sensitive skin.

Editor’s Note:

Interesting Fact: Mulberry has also been studied for its effectiveness in weight management. A research by Italy’s F. De Ritis Institute and the Catholic University of Sacred Heart found that people who had consumed the fruit as part of a balanced diet plan of 1300 calories daily lost about 10% of their body weight in three months.
